Spring may be just a few weeks away but I'm still bundled up in layers and living that all soup, all the time lifestyle. I actually love soup year round but diving into a hot bowl of it when I get home from the cold is just pure comfort.

Cheesy Broccoli and Cheddar Stew with Cornbread
I was torn between calling this a soup or a stew because the consistency is somewhere in between. If you're a Rachael Ray fan, you know she calls this type of dish a stoup and that's probably a fair description for my recipe.

Smoky Cumin Butternut Squash Soup
Every autumn I get excited to see the abundance of butternut squash soups available, either in canned form or in restaurants. But my excitement is always short lived because, as I taste test each one, I find they are sweet and that's not what I want.

Creamy Chicken Soup with Herb Matzo Balls
The Jewish holidays are right around the corner which always makes me crave matzo ball soup. And, the temperature cool off just makes me think soup in general. So, clearly, it's time to make matzo ball soup. But with a twist.

Cheesy Vegetable Chowder
When the temperature outside is 5 degrees with a wind chill of OMG, don't go out there, I make soup. I pretty much live on soup in January and February anyway so I only need to decide what kind of soup I'm making.

Winter Squash Soup with Sage
I hope you all are not getting sick of soup recipes because the temperatures and wind chill around here are below zero and that means I'm eating soup. My big soup pot pretty much lives on top of the stove lately because it's a stay inside, eat all the soup and watch Netflix kind of month.

Black Bean Soup
Happy New Year, friends! I hope you had an opportunity to take some time off around the holidays. I took most of last week off which, for me, meant catching up on sleep, catching up on some personal stuff that I wanted crossed off my list and playing around in the kitchen.

White Bean Stew with Bacon
Confession. When the weather is chilly and I don't have to feed anyone but myself, I pretty much live on soup for dinner. Just give me a slice of crusty bread and a big bowl of hot, preferably creamy, soup and I'm good till breakfast. Is that weird?

Potato and Acorn Squash Soup
Every year I flip through fancy housewares catalogs and see gorgeous soup bowls shaped like pumpkins and squash, just begging to be added to an elegant holiday table. And I want them. And I imagine making pumpkin or squash soup to serve in them. But I never buy them because they're kinda pricey for something I'll just use at Thanksgiving.

Jerusalem Artichoke Soup with Smoked Cheddar and Thyme Croutons
We're kind of in that in-between period, weather wise, right now. Warmer days but chilly nights. The tulip buds are starting to pop out of the ground and spring is trying to make an appearance. Every day I scan the trees for signs of cherry blossoms but they're not ready yet. Must be the chilly evenings. And so I felt like making a warming soup but not one that would be overly heavy. And 'almost spring' kind of soup.

Onion and Smoked Gouda Bisque with Puff Pastry
More than two feet. That's how much snow we got in New York over the weekend. It's not our worst storm but it's up there in the record books although it's a bit late in the season for us. At least it hit on a weekend so that the grounding of flights and suspension or ground traffic wasn't as bad. And we did know it was coming so most of us stocked up for a comfy couple of days of cooking, eating, movie watching and puppy snuggling. Eh, let it snow.

Curried Potato and Broccoli Soup
Happy New Year! Did you start whatever resolutions you made right on January 1st? Or did you admit that there was little chance of anything changing on a weekend and wait until this morning like I did? Very sensible. Because on Friday there was still leftover champagne in my fridge...and cookies...and a serious mac and cheese craving...and a Downton Abbey marathon all weekend long. So unless my resolutions included lying on the sofa, eating cookies and watching TV, it just wasn't going to happen. But now it's Monday and my unofficial official start to the new year.

Spring Pea Soup
When I was wandering around the produce section of the market, looking for dinner inspiration, I wasn't really expecting to make soup. Not that I'm opposed to it almost year round but my mind was looking for spring food inspiration. And there they were - spring peas. And fresh chives and even pea tendrils. And I started to think about a light, simple but flavorful soup.

Curried Potato and Chickpea Soup
OK, I'm officially cold. Somehow the holidays make the weather seem bearable and being outside, among the lights and decorations is festive enough to overcome the chill. But my annual post-holiday intolerance of all things cold, snowy and wintery has set in.

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup
Hey, was that a nip I just felt in the air? Is that quiet from the fact that the constant hum of the air conditioner has been turned off and the windows opened? This weekend was the first time this season that I wore a jacket and enjoyed warming up under my down comforter. I love summer and I tell myself I will hold onto it as long as possible but every year, the first chilly day, a leaf falling at my feet and a display of pumpkins sends me into a daze of autumn happiness. I love autumn!

Chunky Veggie Soup with Gruyere Cheese Toast
Happy New Year! Did you go wild and crazy last night and wake up naked in a public place this morning? The subway is a popular spot for that, here in New York. Brian and I had a few cocktails but it's been many years since I woke up indecent on public transportation. Instead, we woke up in our cozy bed when the first ray of new year's sunshine peeked through our curtains and a 20 lb. ball of fur landed on our heads. Damn, that dog is heavy. I should probably put her on some kind of diet.

Creamy Veggie Soup
A nip in the air. A touch of autumn crispness. An evening of open windows instead of AC. A small first batch of pumpkins at the market. It's not exactly full-on autumn yet but the slight chill down instantly brought my soup desires back. I live on the stuff when the weather cools down.

Creamy White Bean Soup
I had expected to put away my soup pot by this time of the year but the weather hasn't warmed up enough to cool my cravings. In fact, we've had some pretty chilly nights where all I want to do is climb into my warm bed with a bowl of soup. And since I ran across this tasty looking concoction on one of my favorite blogs, I figured it was well worth putting the soup pot to some more use. Stephanie from Sarcastic Cooking has so many wonderful savory meal options along with stunning photographs and this soup was no exception.

Creamy Broccoli and Cheese Soup
You may have heard me mention, several dozen times, that I don't like winter. Technically spring will arrive at the end of this month but you'd have trouble believing that lately. Oh, I know, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. But we're still very much in lion mode around here. We had snow, then torrential rain, then more snow than more rain. Sigh... This past weekend we got a tiny little taste of what's to come. Not that it was warm but at least we could walk from here to there without risking frostbite.
